Why Over 50% of NHS Cataract Surgeries Are Now Performed Privately

Cataracts are the most common cause of treatable sight loss in the UK. Once seen as a routine procedure delivered through the NHS, cataract surgery is increasingly shifting to private providers — and not just for those seeking premium options. For many, it’s now a matter of timing and access.

With more than 650,000 people waiting for ophthalmology treatment across England, and cataract cases accounting for a substantial share, the NHS is under immense strain. Patients regularly face waits of 6 to 18 months, and some wait even longer. The implications for those affected — often older adults whose independence and safety are compromised — are profound.

In response to this growing backlog, a quiet but significant transformation is underway. More than half of all cataract surgeries in England are now being performed by private providers. Some of these are NHS-funded within independent facilities, but a growing proportion are entirely self-funded by patients seeking faster care.

This trend isn’t just showing up in clinics — it’s visible online.

According to recent data, a third of all cataract treatment-related searches now specify private treatment in the UK. That number is expected to rise further, with projections indicating a 20% increase in 2026 in search demand for private cataract surgery and treatments.

The Shift in How Healthcare Is Sought

What we are witnessing is a change not only in how healthcare is delivered, but in how it is sought. Patients are turning to Google — not their GP — as the starting point for care.

Search queries such as “private cataract surgery near me” and “NHS cataract waiting time” are driving direct traffic to private clinic websites. Providers with clear pricing, strong reviews, and streamlined booking pathways are increasingly converting search interest into clinical consultations.

Companies like SpaMedica, Optegra and Practice Plus Group are among those responding to this demand, often providing treatment within two to four weeks of initial enquiry. For patients worried about driving, reading, or living safely on their own, speed is no longer a luxury — it’s a necessity.

What This Means for Ophthalmologists and Private Clinics

At a minimum, it means recognising that patient expectations have changed. Many are no longer willing to wait in the dark — figuratively and literally — for essential treatment.

The opportunity for providers is to ensure their digital presence is as effective and transparent as their clinical care.

That means:

  • Optimising for local search visibility
  • Being upfront about pricing, waiting times and what’s included in treatment
  • Providing helpful, compassionate information in plain English
  • Making it easy to enquire, book, and feel reassured

Looking Ahead to 2026

Private cataract treatment is no longer a niche or secondary option — it is now part of the UK’s mainstream access system. As we head into 2026, demand is expected to rise, and patients will continue to lead with search.

For a growing number, privately restored sight is better than publicly delayed sight. The question now is not whether the private sector can respond — but how prepared it is to meet patients where they are: online, and ready to act.
